METAIRIE, La - With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Yorman Bazardo induced a double play to Neil Wilson, but the Zephyrs were able to push in the game-winning run to take a 4-3 win against the Round Rock Express in Pacific Coast League action Sunday at Zephyr Field. The Express (29-34) fall to 3-9 against New Orleans (30-31) this season; the two teams meet for a final time this season at The Dell Diamond July 19-22.
Donnie Murphy drew a one-out walk to start the rally in the sixth. Gookie Dawkins doubled to put runners at the corners when Bazardo intentionally walked Scott Cousins. Wilson hit a grounder to first baseman Matt Kata who threw to second baseman Marcos Cabral who threw back to Kata, however Murphy was able to cross the plate before the final out.
Three Zephyrs' relievers retired nine of the last 10 Express batters faced to end the game.
New Orleans reliever Brett Sinkbeil (1-2) earned the victory, tossing 1.1 innings with one strikeout. Starter Brian Lawrence threw 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. A walk by pinch hitter Jason Bourgeois brought in Johnson and Brian Bogusevic singled to bring in Kata. Oswaldo Navarro struck out to end the inning, leaving three runners left on.
Navarro, Johnson and Locke each had two hits for the Express, respectively.
Yordany Ramirez left the game in the sixth after making a catch and crashing into the wall in center field.
Round Rock continues its fifth road trip with its second and final series at Iowa. The Express and Cubs will play five games in four days, starting with a 7:05 CDT first pitch Monday at Principle Park. Right-hander Shane Loux (2-1, 6.61 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Express, opposed by righty Thomas Diamond (4-2, 2.24) for the Cubs.
