Cubs Blank 'Birds, Split Series

MEMPHIS, TN - Iowa earned a series split with Memphis Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout victory at AutoZone Park.

The Cubs claimed the lead in the fourth inning on an error by Redbirds second baseman Donovan Solano that allowed Micah Hoffpauir to score. Iowa added three more runs in the sixth. Hoffpauir's double scored the first run and Welington Castillo's double scored two more runs to cap the rally. Hoffpauir had two hits and scored two runs to lead the I-Cubs. The ‘Birds were shutout for the fourth time this year and held to just four hits in the loss.

Iowa starter J.R. Mathes picked up the win tossing six scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with four strikeouts. Redbirds starter P.J. Walters was pinned with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks.

Memphis hits the road tomorrow night at Nashville and will play six games in four days at Greer Stadium. The Redbirds will send lefty Ryan Kulik to the mound to face Sounds southpaw Chris Waters tomorrow night. Memphis returns home on Friday, June 18 to host New Orleans and Nashville during an eight-game homestand.
