TODAY: The RedHawks play the first of five 11:05 a.m. home games on a Field Trip Day against the Round Rock Express (Houston Astros) at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The series is even at 1-1 after OKC blanked Round Rock 6-0 Tuesday night behind Derek Holland (7.2 innings) and Pedro Strop. OKC is tied for second with Albuquerque in the Pacific South, 1 game back of New Orleans. Round Rock is fourth, 2 games back of the lead. Righthander Brandon McCarthy is slated to start for the RedHawks. He tossed 7 innings in a no decision in his seasonal debut on Friday against Albuquerque, allowing 1 run. Lefty Gustavo Chacin is due to start for Round Rock.
HOLLAND, STROP TEAM FOR 4-HITTER: Lefthander Derek Holland went 7.2 innings before giving way to Pedro Strop last night in OKC's 6-0 win. It was the RedHawks' first shutout of the year and snapped a season-high 2-game losing streak. Holland retired 15 straight spanning all or part of the third through eighth innings. It was OKC's longest starting effort of the season. Strop has made a team-high four appearances, earning his second save.
IRIBARREN BREAKS TIE: Second baseman Hernan Iribarren dislodged a 0-0 score in last night's seventh inning with a two-run, inside-the-park home run to left field. Iribarren circled the bases after the ball hit the wall and a piece of left fielder Brian Bogusevic's glove, caroming to an open part of left-center. Iribarren has hit safely in all 4 games he's played and is 6-for-15 (.400) with 5 runs scored and 3 RBIs.
SEVENTH INNING STRETCH: OKC has scored 9 of its 30 runs in the seventh inning of its first 6 games. With last night's final score, the RedHawks have scored and allowed 30 runs this season.
BIG EIGHTH: The RedHawks scored 4 insurance runs in last night's eighth inning, establishing a season high for runs in a single inning. Craig Gentry belted his first home run of the year and Andy Jenkins added a 2-run double in the eighth.
SPANNING THE SEASON: Esteban German is the only RedHawk to have hit safely in all 6 games this year. German is 10-for-24 (.417), which places him tied for ninth in the PCL in batting. German is tied for fourth in walks (6) and fourth by himself in on-base percentage (.533). German started at third base last night, giving him starts this season at three positions including second base and center field. Andy Jenkins has reached base by hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in all 6 games and has 5 hits in the last 2 contests (5-for-9, 3 RBIs). Matt Brown, who sat out last night's game, has reached in all 5 games he's played.
LATE INNING HEROICS: OKC has hit 7 home runs as a team and all have come in the seventh inning or later. Three have tied the game or given the RedHawks the lead. Chad Tracy's 2-run blast on Saturday put the Redhawks in front 6-5, Mitch Moreland tied the score 5-5 in Monday's ninth with a 2-run shot and Hernan Iribarren snapped a 0-0 tie with last night's 2-run, inside-the-park homer.
DOT...DOT...DOT: Last night's winning margin (6) marked the RedHawks' first victory by more than one run after 4-3 and 7-6 tallies...neither team turned a double play last night...OKC has hit into 10 twin killings while turning 3 in the field...Pedro Strop has stranded all 5 runners inherited from previous pitchers, including two last night...Round Rock's 4-hit total on Tuesday marked the fewest by an OKC opponent this year...last night's game was the RedHawks' first of the season that did not feature a lead change...the RedHawks have not been out-hit this year...they have collected more hits than the opposition four times (2-2) and had an even hit total twice (1-1).
