METCALF SPURS POWER SURGE: Travis Metcalf homered in his first 2 at-bats last night in his first game back in a RedHawks uniform to lead a 5-homer effort in OKC's 10-4 win at Rosenblatt Stadium. Metcalf, a 2004 Rangers draftee and a RedHawk for parts of the last 2 seasons, had spent this season with the Omaha Royals until being released last week. Signed by Texas as a free agent on Sunday, Metcalf led off the third inning with a homer against Mike O'Connor. Metcalf's homer in the next inning was a 3-run shot off O'Connor (1-2), who took the loss. Kris Benson (4-3) pitched a season-best 8 innings for the win, allowing all 4 Omaha runs. Royce Huffman went 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs.
ALL ABOUT HOME RUNS: The RedHawks' 5-home run night was a season high, surpassing a 3-homer game April 16 in a 17-3 win at Nashville. In addition to Travis Metcalf's two homers, Kevin Richardson, Royce Huffman and Adam Fox had solo shots. Metcalf and Richardson went back-to-back in the third inning, OKC's first set of consecutive homers since German Duran and Taylor Teagarden did that against Omaha's Roman Colon June 3, 2008 at The Brick. Metcalf matched Richardson's 2-homer night July 16 at Round Rock as the only RedHawks with multi-homer games this season. OKC has hit the fewest home runs in the PCL this season, 71, and allowed the fewest, 84. Last night's barrage surpassed OKC's home run total from its previous 12 games (4) and the 5 homers represent 7% of the team's total for the season.
ONE GAME CLOSER: The RedHawks gained a game on Albuquerque in the American South standings last night, getting within 6.5 of the Isotopes. Albuquerque's magic number to clinch the division remains 9. New Orleans and Round Rock have been mathematically eliminated.
HUFFMAN HEATS UP: Royce Huffman has hit safely in 4 straight and snapped an 8-game drought without an extra-base hit last night with a leadoff homer in the eighth. Huffman has more doubles (26) than any other RedHawk has extra-base hits, excluding Travis Metcalf's numbers while with Omaha.
DINARDO DETAILS: Omaha starter Lenny DiNardo has faced the Redhawks twice this year, going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (12 IP, 4 H, 2 ER). He allowed 1 hit in 6 innings April 24, combining with Carlos Rosa to shut out OKC 3-0. DiNardo had a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the seventh and final inning July 5 before allowing 2 hits, being removed and seeing Chris Hayes allow the inherited runners to score to force extra innings in a doubleheader opener, which OKC won 3-2 in 8 innings. Among DiNardo's 4 hits allowed, one was Justin Smoak's first Triple-A hit and the others were by current Rangers Esteban German (2) and Josh Hamilton.
Current RedHawks vs. DiNardo in 2009:
Arias 0-6 Ramirez 0-2
Benjamin 0-2 Richardson 0-1, Sac bunt
Golson 0-4 Smoak 1-3, 2 K
Huffman 0-4
