Cubs Fall to Z's

August 25, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

Cameron Maybin went 3-for-4 and John Lindsey hit his 19th home run to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs (57-72) past Iowa Cubs (66-65) 8-1 Tuesday night at Principal Park.

Maybin drove in Gookie Dawkins with a one-out first-inning triple and came around to score on Lindsey's broken-bat single one batter later. The Florida Marlins outfield prospect doubled in front of Lindsey's two-run blast in the third inning to help New Orleans stretch its lead to 4-0.

Iowa starter J.R. Mathes (12-7) was in search of his league-leading 13th win of the season, but took the loss.

Maybin's third hit of the game, an RBI single in the fifth inning, closed the book on Mathes. The Iowa southpaw allowed five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings before leaving the game with muscle cramps. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Brian Lawrence (2-0) threw six shutout innings of two-hit baseball to earn the win in just his third start with New Orleans. The veteran right-hander stuck out six, walked two, and hit a batter.

The Zephyrs stretched their lead with three more runs in the sixth inning off Iowa reliever Casey Lambert. Catcher Neil Wilson knocked in a run with an RBI single, and Dawkins piled on with a two-run single to put New Orleans up 8-0.

The Cubs threatened to get back into the game when they loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Nate Spears poked a pinch-hit RBI single to get the Cubs on the board, but New Orleans reliever Nate Field retired So Taguchi, Andres Blanco, and John-Ford Griffin in succession to get out of the inning.

The Cubs are back in action at Principal Park tomorrow evening when they open a five-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling (515) 243-6111.

Notes: With his seventh-inning single, Spears is now hitting .318 (7- for-22) as a pinch hitter this season. His seven pinch hits leads the team ... Micah Hoffpauir did not record an RBI Tuesday, so he remains two RBI short of matching the Iowa Cubs franchise record of 281 set by Joe Hicks (1981-84, '86) ... Dawkins, a .240 hitter this season, hit . 500 (9-for-18) with two homers, a double, six RBI and five runs scored in the five-game set against Iowa ... John Gaub threw a scoreless ninth inning for Iowa. The left-hander is sporting a 0.68 ERA (2ER, 26.1IP) with the Cubs this season.
