Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - One night after hammering out 18 hits against the Express, Memphis ran up against the steady arm of left-hander Josh Muecke on Tuesday.
Muecke held the hot-hitting Redbirds - .328 team batting average, 39 runs over their last five games - to a single hit over seven frames, fanning five and picking up his seventh win of the season, 1-0, at The Dell Diamond.
Muecke (7-9) has posted wins in four of his last five outings and has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last 13 appearances, good for a 2.14 ERA over his last 46 1/3 innings.
Brian Bogusevic and Jose Vallejo led the Express' offense, each picking up a double and a single.
Muecke retired the first seven batters he faced Tuesday before Shane Robinson plunked a single into right-centerfield. The hit didn't phase Muecke, who went on to retire the next 14 batters he faced, exiting after the seventh frame with five strikeouts, no walks and a 1-0 lead intact.
Round Rock scratched out five hits, but the most important came in the bottom of the third.
Vallejo led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error by Redbirds starting pitcher Adam Ottavino (7-11). A wild pitch moved Vallejo to third before J.R. Towles lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Express scratched out three more hits against Ottavino - all of them doubles (Brian Esposito, Bogusevic, Vallejo) - but relied on the scoreless relief of Casey Daigle and Chad Paronto (22 saves) to close out the season finale with Memphis on a high note.
Round Rock next opens a five-game series at The Dell Diamond with Nashville on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
