Oklahoma City Comets News Release

The Oklahoma RedHawks lost 6-3 to the Tucson Tuesday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Former first round pick Max Scherzer struck out six RedHawks over four innings, and Oklahoma City native Jeff Salazar drove in a pair of runs to drop Oklahoma to 2-5 on the current homestand.

Tucson gained a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Oklahoma starter Derek Lee on two doubles and an error. The RedHawks southpaw settled down and retired eight straight to close out the first and keep the score at a two run deficit after three innings. The Sidewinders plated four runs in the fourth inning to extend their advantage. Josh Whitesell, Robby Hammock, Wilkin Castillo, Donnie Kelly, and Salazar each had singles in the inning. Scherzer threw 63 pitches over four innings while working his way back from shoulder problems that put him on the Sidewinders disabled list from the middle of June to the middle of July.

Oklahoma had runners on base in each of the final seven innings and broke up the shutout with a pair of runs in the seventh. Ben Harrison was hit by a pitch to start the inning, advanced to third on an error charged during an attempted double play, and scored on a double by Jason Ellison. Kevin Richardson scored the second run on a ground out by Chris Shelton. The RedHawks added a run in the ninth on two hits and a ground out.

Lee took his second loss in as many starts this year for Oklahoma, while Esmerling Vasquez (3-5) earned the win in relief of Scherzer. Ellison and Joaquin Arias had two hits each to pace Oklahoma, while Shelton drove in a pair. Salazar drove in two on two hits, while he and Josh Whitesell extended their hitting streaks to nine and 13 games respectively.

Oklahoma and Tucson play the final game of this series Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Kameron Loe will pitch for the RedHawks against the Sidewinders Matt Torra. The first pitch is slated for 11:05 am.
