Iowa Cubs News Release
The Salt Lake Bees hit two two-run homers in the seventh inning to top the Iowa Cubs 11-8 at Principal Park in front of 9,559 people on Tuesday night. The Cubs held a 7-5 lead going into the seventh inning but homers by Kendry Morales and Dee Brown off reliever Jose Ascanio gave the Bees the lead for the remainder of the game. The Cubs posted a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Bobby Scales walked and Micah Hoffpauir hit an RBI single. Hoffpauir then scored on Casey McGehee's single. The lead would not last long as Salt Lake batted around in the second inning, scoring four runs, to take a 4-2 lead. The back-and-forth game continued into the bottom of the second when the Cubs scored five runs of their own, three of them from Hoffpauir's home run. Andres Blanco hit a sacrifice fly and Andres Torres hit his seventh triple for Iowa to reclaim the lead, 7-4. The Bees pulled within two when Morales singled and drove in Sean Rodriguez in the fifth inning. However, the Cubs could not hold the 7-5 lead as the Bees tallied four runs in the seventh. Salt Lake padded their 9-7 lead with another pair of run in the ninth inning when Bradley Coon hit a two RBI triple to secure the win. With the bases loaded the Cubs brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell short, scoring one run for the 11-8 final. Starter Jason Stanford, making his second start for the Cubs, did not factor in the decision, allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings. Jose Ascanio (2-1) was tagged with the loss. Salt Lake's Henry Bonilla (5-2) picked up the win.
