Beavers edge Round Rock

PORTLAND, Ore. - Paul McAnulty homered for the sixth time in his last nine games, Peter Ciofrone drove in two runs and Enrique Gonzalez turned in a solid spot start to help the Portland Beavers defeat the Round Rock Express 3-0 Tuesday night at PGE Park.

Gonzalez, making his 12th start for the Beavers (61-54), pitched five scoreless innings, striking out six and holding the Express (53-64) to five hits and a walk to log his first win as a starter since May 26. Dirk Hayhurst, Kevin Cameron and Edwin Moreno held the Express scoreless over the final four innings to preserve the shutout, Portland's fifth of the season.

Colt Morton doubled to start the third, Tom King walked and both scored on Ciofrone's two-out double to right. McAnulty later sliced an opposite-field solo shot against reliever Fernando Nieve to increase the lead.

The loss went to Josh Muecke, who has lost five straight decisions. Muecke (7-11) held the Beavers to two runs, three hits and two walks while striking out four in his five innings.

Nick Gorneault tallied three hits to lead Round Rock, which out-hit the Beavers 9-5 but stranded 11 base runners, including six in scoring position, to fall for the sixth time in its last seven games.

The Beavers wrap up their homestand with a special matinee Wednesday at 1:05 p.m.
