New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Slidell native Xavier Paul had three hits, including the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning to lead the Las Vegas 51s past the New Orleans Zephyrs on Tuesday, 9-5. Paul, a fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Slidell High School in 2003, went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. His one-out single off Tim McNab to score Jason Repko in the seventh broke a 5-5 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit.
Las Vegas took an early 5-1 lead on the Zephyrs, led by starting pitcher Eric Stults, who scattered six hits while allowing one run in five innings. He also hit a two-run homer off Zephyrs starter Jose Santiago in the second.
Santiago was filling in for scheduled starter Ruddy Lugo, who was promoted to the New York Mets earlier in the day. In his second emergency start in the past two weeks, Santiago allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.
The Zephyrs rallied from the 5-1 hole with a four-run sixth inning, capped by a three-run homer from Gustavo Molina that tied the score. They then loaded the bases with one out, but Andy Green grounded into a force out at the plate, and Chris Aguila grounded out to end the threat.
McNab (3-3) gave up four runs in 1.2 innings to take the loss, the Zephyrs' first in their last five games.
The homestand finale is Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., with RHP Brian Stokes scheduled to face RHP James McDonald, making his Triple-A debut for Las Vegas.
