Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis rolled by Iowa 6-3 in the series opener Saturday night at AutoZone Park in front of 12,571 fans.

The Redbirds jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first two innings after Adron Chambers headed home in the first from a wild pitch by I-Cubs starter Nick Struck and back-to-back RBI-doubles by Nick Derba and Maikel Cleto. Chambers walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Shane Robinson, stole third and made it home on a sacrifice fly hit by Nick Stavinoha to give the Redbirds back the lead in the seventh. Derba's RBI-single and Aaron Luna's fielder's choice in the eighth tacked on two insurance runs. Derba led Memphis in their victory going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run in the game.

Steve Clevenger plated the first run for the I-Cubs in the second and solo home runs from Marwin Gonzalez in the fifth and Brett Jackson in the sixth rounded out Iowa's scoring on the night.

Chris Carpenter was pegged with the loss for Iowa surrendering three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Memphis reliever Raul Valdes tossed a scoreless inning for the win as Victor Marte nailed down his team leading 20th save stopping the Cubs in the ninth. Starter Cleto allowed three runs on five hits in six innings while walking two and fanning six.

The Redbirds and Cubs play tomorrow night with game time slated for 6:05 p.m. Redbirds right-hander Brian Broderick will face I-Cubs righty Jay Jackson. Tomorrow is Rockey's birthday sponsored by US FoodService. For ticket information call 901.721.6000 or visit memphisredbirds.com.
