Iowa Cubs News Release

Memphis, TN - The Memphis Redbirds (53-54) opened a four-game series with a 6-3 win over the Iowa Cubs (47-61) at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Redbirds scored the deciding run without the benefit of a hit in the seventh inning. The Cubs are now 3-6 on this road trip and have matched their season-low at 14 games under .500.

The Redbirds scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Cubs' starter Nick Struck walked Adron Chambers to start the inning. Chambers advanced to third on a single by Shane Robinson and scored on a wild pitch. The Cubs tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI double by Steve Clevenger, but the Redbirds scored two more in the bottom of the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by Nick Derba and pitcher Maikel Cleto. Struck worked through five innings and didn't allow another run.

Cleto gave up solo homers to Marwin Gonzalez in the fifth inning and Brett Jackson in the sixth inning that tied the game at three. Jackson has now homered in back-to-back games.

In the bottom of the seventh, Chris Carpenter walked Chambers to start the inning. Robinson moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt and then Chambers stole third. Nick Stavinoha followed with a shallow fly ball to center field. After Jackson made the catch, Chambers tagged up and raced for the plate. The play at the plate was close, but Chambers was called safe. Cubs' manager Bill Dancy argued the call and was ejected from the game. Carpenter (2-3) allowed two more runs in the eighth inning and was charged with the loss.

Raul Valdes (6-2) was the first of three relievers to throw a scoreless inning for the Redbirds and picked up the win. Chuckie Fick was perfect in the eighth and Victor Marte finished the ninth for his 20th save.

The Cubs and Redbirds continue this series tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. RH Jay Jackson (5-10, 6.23) will start for the Cubs against RH Brian Broderick (4-3, 5.56) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45.
