Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - The Iowa Cubs (47-60) and New Orleans Zephyrs (52-55) split a double-header at Zephyr Field tonight. The Zephyrs won the first game 1-0 behind a complete game effort from Chris Volstad. The Cubs won 5-1 in the night cap to get the split. The Cubs and Zephyrs split this four-game series, but the Zephyrs won the season series 10-6.
Volstad (1-0) scattered four singles for the first seven-inning, complete game, shutout against the Cubs since Hayden Penn of New Orleans accomplished the feat on August 23, 2009 at Principal Park. Cubs' starter Chris Rusin (1-1) matched Volstad all the way until the bottom of the sixth inning. Jorge Padilla led off with a bunt single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Torres, stole third, and scored on a two-out single by Mike Cervenak for the game's only run. Justin Berg came in after the single to get the final out.
The Cubs broke their scoreless streak quickly when Brett Jackson led off game two with a solo home run off Adalberto Mendez. It was Jackson's second home run with Iowa this season. The Cubs added two more runs to chase Mendez in the third inning. Cubs' starter Alberto Cabrera and Jackson opened the inning with singles and moved to second and third on a groundout. Lou Montanez drove in both runners with a single. After two more walks to load the bases, Darin Downs came in for the Zephyrs and got a flyout to end the inning.
Cabrera allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings, walked one, and struck out three. John Gaub (4-2) pitched two innings in relief and got the win. He allowed the Zephyrs' only run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from pinch-hitter Jose Lopez. Blake Parker finished the bottom of the seventh.
The Cubs added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, pinch-hitter Marwin Gonzalez walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Jackson. Scott Moore followed with a base hit that brought in Jackson with the Cubs' final run. Jackson finished with three hits, two RBI, and scored three times in game two.
The Cubs travel to Memphis tomorrow to start a four-game series with the Redbirds that will complete this road trip. RH Nick Struck (1-3, 4.30) will start for the Cubs against RH Maikel Cleto (1-2, 5.01) for the Redbirds. The game starts at 6:05 and will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45.
