Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers came up short in a 6-5 loss to the Sacramento River Cats in front of 7,209 fans at Cheney Stadium on Friday night.

Tacoma, trailing the River Cats 6-4, looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Second baseman Matt Tuiasosopo led the charge with a one-run, two-run home run that put the Rainiers within a run.

One out later, shortstop Kyle Seager reached base on a single to represent the tying run, but outfielder Michael Saunders grounded out in the next at-bat to send Tacoma to their sixth loss over their last seven games.

Sacramento jumped out to an early lead 2-0 lead in the outing thanks to back-to-back home runs hit by Jai Miller and Kevin Kouzmanoff with one out in the first inning. That lead stretched to as large as 5-1 following catcher Anthony Recker's one-run single with one out in the sixth.

The infielder Tuiasosopo ended the night collecting two hits and driving in three runs, including a two-run double in the seventh to go along with his solo shot in the ninth.

River Cats reliever Neil Wagner (1-1) earned the win, tossing two scoreless innings three strikeouts over the fifth and sixth. Right-hander Fernando Cabrera picked up his third save of the season despite allowing one run on two hits in the ninth.

Starter Mauricio Robles (1-2) was dealt the loss after surrendering four runs on three hits over 3.1 innings, with four walks and three strikeouts.

The Rainiers (52-55) begin a four-game series with the Las Vegas 51s at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night. Left-hander Chris Seddon (6-5, 5.97) is slated to start for Tacoma against right-hander Scott Richmond (6-8, 6.70) for Las Vegas. The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
