Zephyrs, Cubs Split Doubleheader and Series

The New Orleans Zephyrs and Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader on Friday night, with the Zephyrs taking the opener 1-0, and the Cubs answering to win the second game, 5-1.

In game one, Chris

Volstad threw a seven-inning

complete

game shutout, giving up four hits while striking out four.

Volstad (1-0) was making his first start since being optioned to

New Orleans

by the Florida Marlins last week.

With the game scoreless in the sixth, Jorge Padilla led off the inning with a bunt single, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Torres.

After a ground out by Jose Lopez, Mike

Cervenak beat out an infield single to deep shortstop, plating Padilla with the game's lone run.

The Zephyrs recorded their league-leading 10th shutout, and tied

Sacramento

and

Salt

Lake

for a Pacific Coast League high 21 one-run victories.

Volstad's

complete game was the fourth by a Zephyr this year.

Chris

Rusin (1-1) received the loss, pitching 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out five.

In the nightcap, Brett Jackson led the way for the Cubs going 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a home run to lead off the game.

Zephyrs starter

Adalberto Mendez (1-8) struggled, getting knocked from the game in the third after he allowed a two-run single to Lou Montanez to put

Iowa

ahead 3-0.

Mendez pitched 2 2/3, giving up three runs on four hits and walking three in the loss.

Iowa

starter Alberto Cabrera pitched four scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit in a no-decision.

Lopez put the Z's on the board in the fifth with a pinch-hit RBI single to draw the Zephyrs within 3-1.

The Cubs responded with two runs in the seventh, courtesy of

Jackson

's third hit of the game and Scott Moore's RBI single off of Pete

Andrelczyk.

Iowa

relievers John

Gaub (4-2) and Blake Parker teamed to pitch three innings, giving up one run on three hits to preserve the victory for the Cubs.

The Zephyrs combined for two runs on seven hits in the two seven-inning games, while

Iowa

combined for 10 hits.

New Orleans

still claimed the season series from

Iowa

for just the second time in the last eight years, winning 10 of 16 meetings.

The Zephyrs return to action on Saturday night at

6 p.m.

as they play host to division rival Albuquerque for a four-game set.

Elih Villanueva (5-8) takes the mound for the Z's as he faces off against Tim Sexton (3-5).
