Zephyrs rally late to take series opener from Isotopes

The New Orleans Zephyrs rallied late on Saturday night, scoring in the eighth to force extra innings, then capitalizing on a throwing error in the bottom of the 10th to beat the Albuquerque Isotopes, 2-1 at Zephyr Field.

Tied at 1-1 in the 10th, Mike Cervenak led off with a double to right-center field. Padilla, who went 3-for-5, was asked to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Isotopes reliever Joe Newby sailed the throw into right field after Albuquerque failed to cover first base, allowing Cervenak to score the winning run.

The teams were scoreless through four innings before Jerry Sands put the Isotopes on the board with a solo shot in the fifth.

New Orleans tied the game in the eighth after Brad Davis singled to right with one out to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, and Padilla laced a two-out double down the right field line.

Isotopes reliever Travis Schlichting intentionally walked Joe Thurston to load the bases for Jose Lopez, who tied the game with an infield single down the third base line.

Chris Aguila fouled out on the first pitch he saw, leaving the game tied into the ninth, where the Z's threatened again.

Matt Dominguez led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on a wild pitch. But Ozzie Martinez bounced out to shortstop with the infield playing in, and Davis popped out to send the game into extra innings.

Joe Ceda (3-1) got the victory with two scoreless innings, fanning four batters.

Newby (1-5) gave up three hits in one innings to take the loss.

Zephyrs starter Elih Villanueva held the Isotopes without a hit until the fourth inning, but received the no-decision. Villanueva pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits while striking out five.

Albuquerque's starting pitcher Tim Sexton also did not factor into the decision after yielding just two hits in six scoreless frames. Sexton had allowed 16 runs in 17 hits against the Zephyrs in Albuquerque six days ago.

The Zephyrs return to action Sunday night at 6 p.m. for game two of the four-game set against the Isotopes. Sean West (4-7) takes the mound for the Zephyrs, as he goes against Albuquerque's Randy Keisler (6-4).

Sunday is Hornets Night at Zephyr Field, featuring appearances from Hugo, the Honeybees, and head coach Monty Williams. All fans wearing Hornets gear to the game will receive $5 admission.
