Redbirds Sweep Louisville, Extend Winning Streak to Fifteen

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - The Memphis Redbirds scored four runs in the first two innings and captured a wire-to-wire 9-3 victory over the Louisville Bats on Sunday afternoon. The win secured a seven-game sweep for the Redbirds (36-36) in Louisville and extended the franchise record winning streak to 15 games.

The 'Birds jumped on Louisville (27-44) starter Bo Takahashi right out of the gate, scoring three times in the first inning, all on a home run from Conner Capel. The Texas native had a huge afternoon, finishing with three hits and five RBIs.

Memphis extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning when Evan Mendoza scored on a wild pitch. Daniel Ponce de Leon made his second rehab start of the week for the 'Birds and was very effective, tossing two scoreless frames. In four rehab starts with Memphis in 2021, Ponce de Leon has pitched a combined six innings without allowing a run.

Louisville got on the board with three runs in the third inning, but the 'Birds took momentum back in the fourth and did not allow the Bats to score again in the ballgame. In that fourth inning, the Redbirds scored four times thanks to RBI singles from Lane Thomas and Nolan Gorman, plus a two-run double from Capel.

Memphis scored its final run of the game in the eighth inning on an RBI double from Juan Yepez. The 'Birds bullpen was strong again to finish out the game, as Austin Warner, Grant Black and Seth Elledge combined to pitch the final four innings without surrendering a run.
