Vargas shines in AAA debut

(Allentown, Pa) - Victor Vargas (1-0) shined on Sunday afternoon for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (32-40) as he pitched five shutout innings in a 3-0 win over the Worcester Red Sox (37-33). The IronPigs won five out of seven games and earned their third shutout win of the season.

Darick Hall and Jorge Bonifacio each homered against Enmanuel De Jesus (0-1) to give Lehigh Valley a 2-0 lead through five innings. Daniel Brito hit an RBI triple against Kevin McCarthy in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Pigs a 3-0 lead.

The right-hander threw 60 pitches (36 strikes) and faced 19 batters. Mauricio Llovera pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Jakob Hernandez did the same, earning his first AAA save of the season. Worcester was held to just two hits (singles) throughout the afternoon, both given up by Vargas.

The IronPigs begin a six-game road series on Tuesday in Rochester against the Red Wings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
