Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis held off a Nashville rally in the ninth inning to beat the Sounds 4-3 Friday night at AutoZone Park.
Nashville's Ozzie Chavez pulled the Sounds within a run with a double to center field to score Jose Macias, who drew a leadoff walk from closer Chris Perez. However, Perez rebounded and got the final two outs with Chavez at third base to seal the victory.
Mark Mulder was solid in five innings of work giving up two runs on a Mike Rivera home run in the second inning. The lefty fanned four and walked two while surrendering five hits on 65 pitches. Mike Maroth picked up the win with 2.2 scoreless innings. He walked two, struck out two and gave up a pair of hits on 41 pitches. Perez notched his eighth save for the 'Birds. Nashville starter Mark DiFelice took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
Memphis took the lead in the sixth inning with Tagg Bozied's RBI-single. Bozied came around to score on Nick Stavinoha's single and increase the lead to two runs. The 'Birds tied the game in the fifth inning with Brian Barden's sacrifice fly and Skip Schumaker's single that scored Stavinoha, who led the 'Birds with two hits. Chavez led the Sounds with three hits.
The Redbirds and Sounds will turn back the clock tomorrow night wearing jerseys from their clash in the 1982 World Series. The first 1500 fans will receive 1982 Cardinals replica jersey t-shirts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. with Memphis sending Brad Thompson to the hill to face Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year and former Tennessee standout R.A. Dickey.
