Indianapolis Indians News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Starting pitcher Anthony Swarzak held the Indianapolis Indians scoreless over five innings of work and the Rochester Red Wings withstood a three-run ninth inning rally by the Tribe to earn a 7-5 victory on Thursday night at Frontier Field.
The loss drops Indianapolis' record to 48-45 on the season, while, with the victory, Rochester improves to 34-59 on the year. The win also improves the Red Wings' head-to-head record against the Tribe to 3-2 on the season.
Swarzak (5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 SO), who had lost five consecutive starts from June 17 to July 7, struggled with his command in the contest, but held the Tribe to one hit over five scoreless innings of work to earn his second win of the season. During his five-game losing streak, Swarzak had posted an 8.49 ERA and had given up 30 runs (22 ER) on 37 hits in 23.1 IP.
To back the scoreless effort of their starting pitcher, the Red Wings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the home half of the second inning. The game's first score came courtesy of a solo home run by DH Jose Morales to lead off the frame.
Rochester tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to give the Red Wings' pitching staff a three-run cushion with which to work. RF Brian Dinkelman led off the frame with a single to right field and was plated three pitches later when 2B Brendan Harris hit a deep fly ball to center field for a run-scoring double.
Following Harris' second double at the Triple-A level this season, 1B Brock Peterson worked a six-pitch walk to put runners at first and second with no outs in the fifth. One batter later, C Wilson Ramos stepped to the plate, and, after two unsuccessful sacrifice bunt attempts, grounded the fourth pitch of his at-bat to shortstop. The Tribe recorded the force out, but an errant throw to first base allowed Harris to scamper home from second to give Rochester a 3-0 lead.
The Tribe cut the Red Wings' advantage to 3-1 in the top half of the sixth inning on RF Jonathan Van Every's sixth home run of the season. With his solo blast, Van Every has now hit a home run in three consecutive contests and has collected six RBI during that span.
Indianapolis pulled to within a run of Rochester at 3-2 with an unearned tally in the top of the eighth. With one out in the inning, 2B Jim Negrych and CF Alex Presley strung together back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second for the Indians. After a strikeout accounted for the second out of the inning, a throwing error by Red Wings' SS Trevor Plouffe allowed the Tribe's second run of the contest to cross the plate.
Rochester later padded its advantage with four runs of its own in the bottom of half of the eighth inning. A two-run single by Harris upped the Red Wings' lead to 5-2 before an infield single by Ramos and a sacrifice fly by 3B Matt Macri capped the scoring at 7-2.
The Tribe rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single by DH Brandon Moss and an RBI base knock by Negrych, but Rochester reliever Anthony Slama (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) was able to close out the contest and induce a game-ending ground out with the tying run at the plate.
Indians' starting pitcher Daniel McCutchen (5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) was strapped with his sixth loss of the season after allowing three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings of work, while LHP Daniel Moskos (1.1 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) struck out two batters in 1.1 scoreless innings.
Negrych (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) was the only Tribe batter to record more than one hit in the contest, while Morales (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and Harris (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI) each collected two hits and scored two runs for the Red Wings.
Indianapolis continues its four-game series against the Rochester Red Wings on Friday, July 16 at 6:05 p.m. LHP Brian Burres is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while LHP Glen Perkins is the probable starter for the Red Wings.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 5:45 p.m.
