Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, began the second half of their season with an 8-2 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the loss, the Chiefs fell to 5-6 against Pawtucket this season. The loss also put them three games behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for first place in the IL North.

The PawSox (42-49) did most of their damage against Chiefs starter Luis Atilano in the second inning. Pawtucket put up five runs in the frame. Lars Anderson and Niuman Romero both singled and centerfielder Josh Reddick took a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Red Sox second baseman Tug Hulett. Hulett stroked a sac fly to deep centerfield to put Pawtucket on top 1-0. Gil Velazquez kept the inning going with a two-run double down the left field line. Leftfielder Ryan Kalish's triple to right center field later in the inning brought home another Pawtucket run. In total, nine hitters went to the plate against Atilano in the inning.

Syracuse came back with a run in the bottom half of the second, cutting Pawtucket's lead to four. First baseman Jason Botts clocked a double to right field to begin the inning. Leonard Davis grounder up the middle ended up just out of the reach of Tug Hulett, scoring Botts with the Chiefs' first run of the night. Davis collected two more hits later in the game to finish the night three for four.

The Chiefs (51-41) did not score again until the eighth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Santo Luis plunked Kevin Mench on the wrist, scoring Seth Bynum from third for Syracuse's second and final run. Later in the frame, Davis grounded into a 2-3 double play to end the threat.

In his first start for Syracuse since April 18th against Lehigh Valley, Atilano lasted 2 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and five runs. He walked three and did not record a strikeout.

Kris Johnson won for the fourth time. He tossed six innings for the PawSox, allowing one run and four hits. Johnson walked one and struck out six.

Chiefs and PawSox meet again Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse righthander Jason Jones (1-3, 4.07) will go up against rehabbing major leaguer Clay Buchholz. Buchholz is 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA in 15 starts with Boston this season. First pitch will be at 7:00.
