Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk was held to just three hits as they fell to the Columbus Clippers 6-1 Thursday night.
Clippers starter Carlos Carrasco (8-4) was excellent in earning the win, as he allowed an unearned run in seven solid innings. After a walk and a hit batter in the second inning, the 23-year-old right-hander settled in and retired 15 straight batters before Rhyne Hughes hit a two-out single in the seventh inning.
Carrasco walked one and struck out six, throwing 54 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
A sacrifice fly by Michael Aubrey in the first inning gave Norfolk an early lead, but the Clippers rallied back with three runs in the second on an RBI single by Wes Hodges and a two-run homer by Wyatt Toregas. The Clippers added two runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Josh Rodriguez and padded their lead with a ninth inning run-scoring single by Jordan Brown.
Norfolk starter Tim Bascom (2-4) took the loss, as he surrendered three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Bascom labored throughout the outing, needing 74 pitches to navigate three frames.
Matt Angle led Norfolk's offense with two singles, a stolen base and a run scored. Angle has now reached base safely in 22 of his last 24 games and is batting .282 with 14 steals for the Tides.
The two clubs will square off again on Friday night, with Troy Patton (6-9, 4.67) slated to take the hill for Norfolk against Columbus southpaw David Huff (3-0, 4.15). There will be a special pregame concert featuring the Baha Men, with the Harbor Park gates opening at 5:30. The concert will begin at 6:00, and first pitch is scheduled for 8:00.
