Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Bulls opened up the second half of 2010 with a 6-2 loss at the hands of second place Charlotte. The Durham offense grounded into a season-high five double plays, including two with runners in scoring position to prevent the Bulls from climbing back after falling behind by six in the fifth inning.
Charlotte jumped out in front with a run in the first against Richard De Los Santos. Josh Kroeger had a two-out RBI double into the right-center field gap to score Luis Rodriguez. They would add four more in the fourth behind RBI singles by Brent Morel and Luis Rodriguez and a two-run double by Buck Coats to make it a 5-0 lead.
De Los Santos' night ended after 4.0 innings of work, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work while walking two and striking out one.
Darin Downs allowed a run in his only inning of work, another RBI double by Morel which scored Kroeger and extended the Knights lead to six.
The Bulls tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning, as Fernando Perez singled with the bases loaded to bring across two runs off Charlotte right-hander Lucas Harrell. They would reload the bases after a walk to Desmond Jennings, as they brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out. Harrell got JJ Furmaniak swinging, before Justin Ruggiano grounded into an inning ending double-play.
Freddy Dolsi had three shutout innings of relief for Charlotte, and Randy Williams shut the door in the ninth by getting Angel Chavez to ground into the fifth and final double play of the night for Durham.
The loss drops the Bulls to 55-36 on the season, but they still remain 8.0 games ahead of the Knights for first place in the Southern Division. The two teams square off again tomorrow as RHP Virgil Vasquez (4-0 3.55) takes the mound against RHP Jeff Marquez (7-4 4.02) for Charlotte. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
