G-Braves Survive Extra Innings to Break Losing Streak

The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Buffalo Bisons 8-7 in 10 innings on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Field. The G-Braves returned from their All-Star break with a win, snapping a 5-game losing streak that started on July 7. Gwinnett tied a season-high for runs in an inning when they scored 6 in the 8th, but they gave up 5 runs in the 9th and were forced into extra innings. This was the G-Braves' third extra innings game of the year and their first win in that scenario. Gwinnett (43-49) sits in third place in the International League South and 12 games behind Durham. Buffalo (46-45) sit in third place in the IL North and 7.5 games behind Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

It Was Over When: In the top of the 10th inning, Jordan Schafer's RBI double scored Joe Thurston and put the G-Braves in the lead for good.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Todd Redmond struck out 5 and gave up 2 R/ER on 6 hits in his 7 innings of work. Scott Proctor allowed 4 R/ER on 4 hits in 1.1 IP. Craig Kimbrel (2-0) walked in the tying run in the 9th inning. Steven Marek earned his 5th save of the season.

At the plate: Schafer was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Diory Hernandez was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI. Thurston went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Ramon Ortiz allowed only 1 R/ER on 4 hits in 6 innings. Manual Alvarez (0-1) was credited with the loss.

At the plate: Fernando Martinez was 3-for-5 with 2 home runs and 3 runs scored. J.R. House was 1-for-5 and hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the 9th.

On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Buffalo in game two of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. at Coca-Cola Field. G-Braves LHP Scott Diamond (NR) will be making his Triple-A debut and is scheduled to face LHP Pat Misch (9-3, 3.12 ERA) of the Bisons.
