Red Bulls Clinch 11th-Straight MLS Cup Playoff Berth; Defeat New England, 1-0
October 28, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York Red Bulls News Release
Defender Aaron Long scored a late-game winner to help the New York Red Bulls (8-8-5, 29 pts) defeat the New England Revolution (7-6-8, 21 pts), 1-0 on Wednesday at Red Bull Arena.
With the win and the loss by Inter Miami CF, New York clinched a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs for the 11th straight season and 21st overall. The 11 consecutive postseason berths is the second longest streak, both active and all-time in league history, behind Seattle's 12-straight berths. The Red Bulls 21 playoff appearances are the most in league history, having missed just four times (1997, '99, 2002, & 2009)
The Red Bulls stretched their unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches (2-0-3) with their fifth clean sheet of the season.
New York has recorded 16 goals in the last nine games after scoring just nine goals through the first 12 matches. The Red Bulls have tallied at least one goal in nine consecutive matches.
The Red Bulls continued their positive-result run after scoring the first goal in a match, having scored first in 11 of 21 matches and going 7-1-3 when scoring first. Since the Red Bulls implemented their high-press system in 2015, New York is 77-13-19 when scoring the first goal of the match.
With time winding down in regulation, Kaku swung in his corner kick to the middle of the box for Tim Parker to head the pass towards goal. Long picked up the loose ball and finished to the far post for the game winner.
Long scored his second goal of the season and eighth career MLS regular-season goal. His eight goals sets a franchise record for goals by a defender, surpassing Steve Jolley, who previously held the record at seven.
Kaku raised his team-leading assist total to five on the year. He also raised his career MLS regular-season total to 25 to move into a tie with Mark Lisi for eighth all-time at New York.
Parker recorded his first assist of the season and fourth for his career.
Yonkers native Ryan Meara recorded two saves to tally his third clean sheet of the season and raise his career total to seven.
Meara earned his fourth win in net in 2020 and his 14th overall for his career. His 14 wins as a goalkeeper moved him to sole possession of seventh all-time with the Red Bulls.
Interim Head Coach Bradley Carnell improved his overall record to 5-4-3.
New York is 31-19-14 all-time in the month of October. The Red Bulls have scored 101 goals and allowed 80 in the 10th month of the year.
New York travels on Sunday to face New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. Sunday's match will kickoff at 7 p.m. and have coverage on MSG and New York Red Bulls Radio in English and Spanish.
