Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Hosting the Tijuana Cimarrones for game three of a five-game series on Friday night, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park looking for revenge after a Canada Day loss yesterday afternoon. Sending Andrew Arreola (3-3) to the mound in the first inning, the home side matched up against Tijuana starter Kyle Corwin (0-2).
For a third consecutive game it was the Cimarrones first on the board, when a single from Jamie McGraw and a double off the bat of Kit Pellow set up an RBI sacrifice fly from Mark Samuelson for a 1-0 Tijuana lead in the top of the first.
With Andrew Arreola settling in from there, the Seals and Cimarrones played three straight frames of scoreless baseball before Victoria kicked down the door in the bottom of the fifth. With Colin Moro reaching on an error, Chris Van Rossum drawing a walk and Andrew Arreola filling the bases with an infield single, the Seals evened the score on a base hit from Wilver Perez.
Taking the lead two batters later, an RBI single courtesy of Terrence McClain put the home side up 2-1 and left the bases loaded. Josh Arhart then lifted just the second grand slam in franchise history over the left field fence to hand the Seals a commanding 6-1 advantage.
But the inning was just beginning for Victoria. After a base hit from Brian Rios put a runner on, Matt Kavanaugh picked up his third home run of the season to cash another pair for the Seals. The next batter, Colin Moro, joined in the act with a solo bomb off the scoreboard in left, pushing the score to 9-1 in favour of Victoria.
Before the inning was out Perez victimized relief pitcher Jason Fronczak with a home run of his own, marking the fourth round-tripper of the fifth inning for the Seals, a new franchise record, while evening the mark for most runs in a single inning on an eleven-run frame for the home side.
Polishing off a dominant offensive outing with a sacrifice fly from Shane Cronin in the seventh, the Seals cruised to a game three win with a 12-1 drubbing of the Cimarrones.
Andrew Arreola improved his record to 4-3 on the season with seven strong innings on the hill, while Kyle Corwin took the loss and was tagged with eight earned runs. Josh Arhart paced the offense and stretched his hit streak to ten games for Victoria, while three runs batted in from Wilver Perez rounded out a big night for the Seals.
Victoria will be back in action tomorrow night at Royal Athletic Park for game four against Tijuana, a 7:05 p.m. (PT) start time. The game will be broadcast online at www.victoriaselas.ca, and also inside the ballpark on 88.1 FM. Single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office. Call (250) 220-7777 for more information, or to book your seat today!
