Chico Outlaws News Release
(Chico, CA.) Chico's Javier Ortiz threw a complete game on Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium, becoming just the sixth pitcher in the GBL to achieve the feat this season, holding the St George Roadrunners to three earned runs on seven hits in a 9-3 Outlaws win.
Ortiz (1-2), who threw a season-high 116 pitches, fanned seven and walked just one, retiring the 16 of the last 17 batters he faced, including the last seven to close out the game.
The Roadrunners got out of the gate early with a two-run homerun off the bat off Nick Fitzgerald in the second inning to put St George up 2-0.
Chico answered with a run of thier own in the bottom of the second when catcher Mike Rose and third baseman Ismael Castro hit back-to-back doubles, cutting the Roadrunner lead in half at 2-1.
St George put up their final tally of the night on a Jermy Acey RBI single to score former Chico Outlaw Henry Calderon, giving the Roadrunners their two run lead back at 3-1.
The Outlaws bats came alive in the bottom of the third inning when Ortiz singled to lead off the frame. Mitch Einertson followed up with a single of his own, putting runners on first and second. After a Bobby Hill sac bunt, JJ Sherrill hit a sharp ball to third and beat the throw, scoring Ortiz. Einertson then scored on a fielder's choice by Mikael Jova, tying the game at three apeice.
Einertson's RBI groundout in the fourth inning gave the Outlaws their first lead of the night and one they would not relinquish at 4-3.
The fifth inning saw Chico plate two more runs on a two RBI double by Castro after Jova walked and Rose was hit by a pitch by Roadrunners starter Jon Dutton (3-4), pushing the score to 6-3 Outlaws.
Jova hit a solo shot to left field to start the seventh inning, his second jack of the year. Rose then singled, setting up rookie Pascual Del Real two batters later for an RBI single to make the final score of 8-3
The Outlaws won for the 29th time this year against nine losses, while St George falls to 13-25 overall with the loss. The magic number to clinch the GBL North title is two games.
The two teams will wrap up this four game series on Sunday night on the 4th of July, with first pitch at 6:35 pm. The Outlaws send former Houston Astro Mark McLemore to the bump against hard-throwing right-hander Raymar Diaz of St George.
