Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Stettler, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings exhibition road show was off to Stettler for a date with the Red Deer Rebels. It is the first of back to back games for the two clubs. They will meet again in Leduc tomorrow night for the Battle in Oil Country, presented by ENMAX. Both teams enter the Stettler contest unbeaten in exhibition action. The Rebels downed the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Oil Kings Pre-season Tournament in St. Albert, and beat the Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday night. The Oil Kings are 3 - 0 after downing the Regina Pats, the Swift Current Broncos and the Medicine Hat Tigers in their tournament.
The first half of the opening period is a defensive stalemate. The Oil Kings manage five shots to Red Deers three. The Oil Kings best chances come from the line of Craig McCallum, Dylan Wruck and Clayton Cumiskey. The Rebels capitalize on their second power play of the period, when Brett Ferguson scores from the slot, its 1 - 0 after one.
The Rebels make it 2 - 0 in the second, on another power play. Nathan Green converts a two on one feed from Jordie Deagle, before the Oil Kings Cam Lanigan can get across. The Oil Kings get on the board late in the second, when Craig McCallum bangs one in on a goal mouth scramble, its 2 - 1 after 2.
The Oil Kings capitalize on an early power play in the third. TJ Foster walks in off the half wall and rips one 5 hole on the Rebels Cam Gorchynski, to make it 2 all. The Oil Kings take their first lead, just over a minute later, when McCallum scores his second of the game. Tyler Hlookoff's shot takes a funny bounce off the end glass and McCallum tucks it in, its 3 - 2. The same two connect again, when McCallum fires a shot and Hlookoff sticks in the rebound. Three quick goals in the third, gives the Oil Kings a two goal lead. The Rebels get back in it, Edmonton down two men, when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fires a shot from the top of the circles past Lanigan. Red Deer is within one with just over five minutes left. With under three minutes to go, Nugent-Hopkins scores again to pull Red Deer even at 4.
In the overtime, the Oil Kings have some great chances but can't score. We have a shootout. It goes to extra shooters, as both goalies are hot. Red Deer defenseman Mathew Dumba scores on a sick deke to win it for Red Deer on the third extra shooter. The final score is the Rebels 5, the Oil Kings 4.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in Leduc for the Battle in Oil Country, at 7:00 pm, at the Black Gold Arena. The Oil Kings wrap up their exhibition schedule with a game in Barrhead, against the Calgary Hitmen, on September 11th. Then the games start to count. The Oil Kings open the Regular Season at home against the Hitmen, September 19th, at 7:00 pm, at Rexall Place.
