Wheaties Face Pats Friday
September 4, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings get their first taste of pre-season action Friday night when they play host to the Regina Pats at Westman Place.
The Pats come to town looking for their first win of the exhibition schedule (0-2-0-1) while the Wheat Kings will be playing their first of four pre-season games. Brandon travels to Regina on Wednesday night before returning home to play host to Moose Jaw one week from tonight.
Brandon expects to ice a rookie laden lineup Friday as eight of its veterans have either left or are about to leave for National Hockey League training camps. Among them is 18-year old center Brayden Schenn, who left for Los Angeles on Thursday. The Saskatoon product was the fifth overall selection in June's NHL Entry Draft.
Others on their way to pro camps include Brodie Melnychuk (San Jose), Jordan Hale (Ottawa), Matt Calvert (Columbus), Scott Glennie (Dallas), Alexander Urbom (New Jersey), Toni Rajala (Edmonton) and Colby Robak (Florida). Veteran Jay Fehr meanwhile has been forced to pass on a free agent invitation to join the Minnesota Wild camp as he continues to recover from an off-season leg injury.
With so many veterans not expected to play on Friday, fans will have a chance to see a number of rookies including Jordan DePape, Brenden Walker, Michael Ferland and Wheaton King. While Depape and Walker finished 1-2 in Manitoba Junior Hockey League rookie scoring last season, Ferland and King were key members of the AAA Midget Wheat Kings.
Others that could be in Friday's lineup include Brendan Rouse, Brett Rock, Jesse Sinatynski and Klarc Wilson, the club's first round pick in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.
Puck drop Friday night is 7:30 and tickets are on sale at the Keystone Box Office (located in the Pioneer Lounge due to renovations). Those fans attending are encouraged to use the west or south main entrances for tonight's exhibition game.
While on the subject of tickets, the hockey club has announced that close to 3,300 Season Tickets have been purchased for the upcoming season. For more information on Season Tickets or Memorial Cup Ticket packages, fans can visit www.wheatkings.com or call 726-3555.
