Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off their 2009 Western Hockey League pre-season schedule Friday night with a 4-3 Overtime Shootout victory over the visiting Regina Pats.
Former AAA Midget Wheat King scoring star Michael Ferland - the sixth and final shooter - scored the game winner on a terrific move to beat Regina goalkeeper Derek Tendler. Aaron Lewadniuk also scored in the shootout while veteran Brett Leffler replied for the Pats, who fell to 0-2-0-2 in four pre-season games.
The Wheat Kings, who travel to Regina on Wednesday night, trailed 2-1 after twenty minutes of play but had a one goal lead entering the third after scoring two unanswered second period goals, including one by defenceman Darren Bestland with just 37 seconds remaining in the period.
Stephane Robidoux and Jesse Hall also scored for the Wheat Kings, who outshot Regina 23-22. Matt Delahey, Brandon Davidson and Leffer replied for the Pats.
Brandon's netminding chores were handled by 16-year old rookie Liam Liston and former Edmonton Oil King Dalyn Flette. While Liston stopped eight of 10 shots, Flette turned aside eleven of 12 that he faced in regulation and two of three in the Shootout.
Liston was one of ten rookies to take to the ice Friday night. The others included defencemen Brett Rock, Ryley Miller, Kyle Krzyzaniak as well as forwards Klarc Wilson, Jordan DePape, Wheaton King, Brenden Walker, Brendan Rouse and Ferland.
After playing the Pats in Regina on Wednesday, the Wheat Kings will return home to meet the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday, September 11th. Brandon will bring the curtain up on the 2009-10 regular season one week later in Prince Albert.
The Wheat Kings' Coca Cola Home Opener is scheduled for Friday, September 25th against Swift Current and tickets for that game will go on sale Tuesday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 726-3555.
