Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Richmond, VA) - The Reading Fightin Phils (16-20) fell in both ends of Thursday night's doubleheader to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (15-21). Richmond now holds the 3-0 edge in this week's six-game series.
Game One
Richmond captured a dominant 9-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Flying Squirrels struck early with six runs in the second, which came on three walks a single and three doubles. That chased Reading starter Efrain Contreras from the game.
Jose Rodriguez reached on a double in the third. He stole third and came home on a throwing error to make it 6-1. Richmond responded though with a run in the third and two runs in the sixth, thanks to a two-run home run from Jairo Pomares.
Behind Contreras on the mound was Cristian Hernandez and Andrew Schultz. Hernandez allowed one run over two innings. Matt Russell did not allow a hit or run over two innings of work on the hill. Jose Rodriguez was the lone bright spot offensively with two hits.
Game Two
Reading's bats were quiet again in a 3-1 game two loss. Kendall Simmons reached in the second on a walk and scored on a single from Caleb Ricketts after stealing second base. Richmond tied the game at one in the second frame.
The Flying Squirrels took the 3-1 lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning when Carter Howell hit a two-run homer. Reading loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get a run home. Lachlan Wells started for Reading and suffered the loss, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, with six strikeouts. Tyler McKay allowed one hit and struck out one in a clean inning of relief.
Offensively, Caleb Ricketts led the way for Reading with two hits, and Jose Rodriguez' strong night continued with two more hits in game two.
