Erie SeaWolves News Release
The Reading Fightin Phils (26-34) jumped out to an early lead and never let up, beating the Erie SeaWolves (25-35) at UPMC Park.
The Fightin's wasted no time to take the lead on Erie. Jan Hernandez clobbered his second home run of the series, a two-run bomb on Sandy Baez in the first inning to make it 2-0.
Reading added three more runs in the second on Baez to propel them to a 5-0 lead. Cord Sandberg started his 4 for 4 night with a homer to center, followed by a Jiandido Tromp double. Malquin Canelo sent a ball through the legs of A.J. Simcox at third, scoring Tromp. Cornelius Randolph singled in Canelo, giving the Fightins their largest lead of the game.
Erie fought back within one in the bottom of the third. Reading starter JoJo Romero let up a lead off single to Danny Woodrow, and then another bloop single from Jake Robson. Will Maddoxhit a ball deep in the hole at short, and Canelo could not make the throw to third. With the bases loaded, Dominic Ficociello singled to right to bring in two. A Tromp error in right allowed Maddox to score and Ficociello move to third on the same play. Lester drove in Ficociello on a grounder to score the fourth run of the inning. After three innings of play, Erie trailed 5-4.
Tromp cracked a two-run home run off of Baez in the fourth to make the score 7-4 Reading.
Canelo extended the Reading lead to 8-4 in the seventh after a sac fly to right field scored Sandberg.
Kody Eaves grounded out to first to bring in Maddox, but the SeaWolves would not score again in an 8-5 loss.
Romero (4-4) hurled 6.0 IP with six hits, four runs, three earned, with no walks and seven strikeouts. Baez (0-5) failed to find his first win of the season, surrendering five earned on eight hits in 3.2 IP with five strikeouts. Kyle Singer earned his first save with Reading after pitching a scoreless ninth.
