Reading Fightin Phils News Release

Reading, PA -- It was a game even a winning manager would admit he enjoyed: It had quality pitching, decent offense and perfect defense. It all came together for the Phillies in a 7-1 victory Friday night over the Connecticut Defenders before a crowd of 9,011.

Matt Maloney (3-1) and two relievers limited the Defenders to five hits, their only run coming on a second-inning Brian Horwitz home run. Maloney allowed the run and four hits in six innings of work. Chris Key was perfect for two innings, and Ryan Cameron allowed a harmless bloop single in the ninth.

Jesus Merchan, who has 13 hits in his last 20 at-bats, went 3-for-4 with a triple to jack his batting average to .400. He led a 12-hit attack, with Joey Hammond going 2-for-4 and Jason Hill knocking in two runs. The Phillies (14-12) broke open a 1-1 game with a four-spot in the fifth, Hammond, Merchan and Matt Padgett contributing key hits.

Garrett Broshuis (0-4) started and took the loss. The Defenders fell to 8-14.
