Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Nic Jackson hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, propelling the Binghamton Mets to a 6-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in the series opener at NYSEG Stadium Friday. The victory snaps Binghamton's two-game losing streak.

Binghamton's Salvador Aguilar and Portland's Charlie Zink matched zeros through the first four innings before the B-Mets (7-15) broke through in the fifth. After Jose Coronado reached on a one-out single and J.E. Cruz was hit by a pitch, Fernando Martinez drove both in with a double off the right-centerfield wall for a 2-0 lead.

Portland (10-10) responded in the sixth, beginning the inning with five straight hits, including an RBI single by Brian Pritz that chased Aguilar from the ballgame before Jeff Natale reached on an RBI infield hit off Robert Paulk. Jed Lowrie put Portland up 3-2 when Paulk (1-0) hit him with the bases loaded.

The B-Mets tied the score in the bottom of the sixth. Zink issued back-to-back walks to Mike Nickeas and Jackson and, two batters later, Cruz hit a ball that was thrown away by Portland third baseman Andrew Pinckney, allowing Nickeas to scamper home with the tying run.

The score stayed tied until the eighth. Caleb Stewart began the inning by reaching on an infield hit before Nickeas bunted him over to second. Portland first baseman Eric Crozier fielded the bunt and was unable to throw out Stewart at second, putting two men on for Jackson, who launched one over the rightfield fence for his first home run of the year.

After Paulk's three shutout innings of relief, Carlos Muñiz followed with a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save in five chances.

Saturday, the B-Mets play the second game of their three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs. Kevin Mulvey (2-3, 4.84) will start for the B-Mets against southpaw Tommy Hottovy (0-3, 6.87) of Portland. Game time is 1:05 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 12:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
