NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays and head coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that they have signed Peter Szabo for the 2006-2007 season.

Szabo, 25, is a native of Nitra, Slovakia. The 5'9", 175-pound center played four years of college hockey at St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, MN with fellow Stingrays newcomer T.J. McElroy before joining the Motor City Mechanics of the UHL last season. With the mechanics, Szabo put up 78 points (23g, 55a) in 72 games. He was fourth in scoring in the UHL for rookies and had the most assists in the UHL for rookies.

"Szabo has really impressed us in training camp," noted Fitzsimmons. "He is a skilled player who had great numbers in the UHL and should add an offensive spark to the team."

The 14th season of professional hockey in the Low Country is underway on October 20 when the Stingrays travel to Gwinnett. The Rays home opener is October 21 when they take on the Columbia Inferno at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum. Activities start at 4:00 p.m. on the Plaza and continue all night.
