Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The 2006 Kelly Cup champion Alaska Aces began the long grind back to the title with a 3-1 victory over Toledo in their pre-season opener before 2,616 at Sullivan Arena Tuesday.
Veterans Mike Scott, Kimbi Daniels, and Peter Metcalf did not play for Alaska, which started rookie goaltender Isaac Reichmuth in goal. Reichmuth faced just five shots in the first period while the Aces grabbed a 1-0 on a power play goal by Matt Shasby, who ripped a one-timer past Toledo starter Logan Koopmans at 12:12. The Storm, defending 2006 ECHL North Division champions and winners of 46 games a year ago, held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal in the second period but dropped further behind just 35 seconds into the frame when Olivier Filion picked up a loose rebound in the slot and whistled the puck over Koopmans' right shoulder. Alaska maintained its 2-0 lead deep into the third period, limiting Toledo to just one shot for more than 15 minutes, but the Storm finally broke through on their own power play as Mitch Maunu beat a screened Reichmuth with a shot from the point at 15:48 to deny the University of Minnesota-Duluth rookie a shutout in his pro debut.
The Aces wrapped up their sixth consecutive pre-season victory as Vladimir Novak flicked home a perfect centering pass from Corbin Schmidt with 4.6 seconds remaining and Alaska on another power play. The Aces completed the night 2-for-9 on the man advantage, while the Storm converted just one of 12 opportunities. Alaska out-shot Toledo 29-19, including 15-6 over the final 20 minutes.
The teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. in Sullivan Arena. Tickets are just $10, regardless of seat location. Alaska opens its regular season at home October 20 and 21 against Victoria at 7:15 p.m. The championship banners will be raised to the rafters in a special pre-game ceremony at to the home opener.
