Ray Negron Coming to PNC Field
May 18, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) announce that Ray Negron, a long-time member of the New York Yankees' family will visit PNC Field on May 22 and June 26.
Negron is a special consultant for the New York Yankees and an award-winning author. He and Sally Cook penned the book "Yankee Miracles: Life with the Boss and the Bronx Bombers." He has also authored three best-selling children's books: "The Boy of Steel," "The Greatest Story Never Told" and "One Last Time: Good-bye to Yankee Stadium."
His career with the Yankees began in 1973 at the age of 17 when George M. Steinbrenner caught him spray painting an interlocking NY on the side of the old Yankee Stadium. Instead of turning him over to the police, Mr. Steinbrenner turned him over to clubhouse manager Pete Sheehey to work off the cost of the damage. That led him to becoming the bat boy for the famous 1977 "Bronx Zoo" Yankees team led by Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson and Thurman Munson and the three became close personal friends and mentors to Ray.
Negron will sign copies of his books, pose for pictures, participate in that night's radio broadcast and address the crowd during the on-field pregame show.
He has also arranged for the public premiere of the animated film Henry & Me, to be shown exclusively to RailRiders' fans at PNC field following each of his appearances. He was an executive producer of the film, which starred Richard Gere as the voice of Lou Gehrig and Chazz Palminteri as the voice of Babe Ruth. Yankees legends Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada portrayed themselves, as did current Yankees Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia and Joe Girardi. The voices of Michael Kay and John Sterling also appear in the movie.
Negron is also the founder of Hank's Yanks, youth baseball teams that offer an opportunity for at-risk kids to find a better life through baseball. Negron's vision, with the backing of Hank Steinbrenner, has enabled these young men to have the chance to go to college and follow their dreams of playing professional baseball.
Ray's community outreach work and charitable contributions have won him many prestigious awards. He is a frequent contributor to the YES Network and featured in Reggie Jackson's Yankeeography. He authored "Five Days in August," his YES.com five-part tribute to Thurman Munson on the 30th anniversary of the Yankee captain's death. He often guests on sports broadcasts in the New York area to give his unique perspective and insight on the Yankees.
The May 22nd and June 26th games are sponsored by Dick's Sporting Goods with post-game fireworks (before Henry & Me) presented by Jack Williams Tire and Kumho Tire, and the local Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts troops in attendance will sleep at the stadium on these dates.
The SWB RailRiders encourage families to have their children participate in the READing RailRoad program and to read Ray Negron's books (on sale at PNC Field). By reading these books, children ages 4-12 can count them towards the five books needed to be read at the local library to be rewarded with a ticket to the RailRiders' Library Game on August 12. Fans can call their local library to get involved.
The RailRiders return home on Monday, May 18 and look to extend their four game winning streak at the beginning of a seven-game homestand with the first of three against the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox). Wednesday is a 10:35 a.m. first pitch against the Knights at PNC Field as the RailRiders host School Day - BATtle Bullying, presented by Commonwealth Connections Academy. The RailRiders will wear special theme jerseys for Country Night on Thursday, May 21st, against the Durham Bulls. For tickets or more information, call 570-969-BALL (2255) or visit the team's website, www.swbrailriders.com.
