Charlotte Knights News Release
(MOOSIC, PA) - After a one-hour delay, the Charlotte Knights were shut out 3-0 by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the first game of their three-game series on a rainy Monday night at PNC Field.
Knights starter RHP Junior Guerra and 'Riders starter RHP Bryan Mitchell matched each other pitch-for-pitch as they combined to allow only five hits through the first five innings of a scoreless game.
Guerra (0-2, 2.16) would then allow one run on three hits - all singles - in the bottom of the sixth inning, leading to his second loss of the season. The native of Venezuela is still looking for his first Triple-A win despite allowing only four runs over three starts (16.2 IP) since joining the Knights earlier this month.
Mitchell was relieved by LHP Tyler Webb (1-2, 3.63) to begin the sixth inning, and the RailRiders reliever would allow two hits over 1.1 scoreless innings while striking out three Knights on his way to his first win of the season.
The Knights threatened in the top of the seventh inning when George Kottaras and Leury Garcia both singled off of Webb, but RHP Mark Montgomery entered the game for the RailRiders and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and the threat.
Montgomery was replaced by LHP Jacob Lindgren with one-out in the eighth inning, and the lefty recorded the final five outs to complete the shutout and earn his third save of the season. The shutout was the second of the Knights this season.
The RailRiders would add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning on a Tyler Austin sacrifice-fly and an RBI-single by Ben Gamel off of RHP Shawn Haviland, pushing their lead to 3-0.
George Kottaras would lead the Knights offense, contributing two of the team's five hits, including one of the team's two doubles. The Charlotte catcher was the only Knight to tally multiple hits in the game.
The Knights (21-16) will look to snap the RailRiders (21-18) five-game winning streak on Tuesday when the two teams continue their three-game series at PNC Field. RHP Brad Penny will take the mound for the Knights in the 6:35 p.m. start, and you can catch all the action on the Knights flagship station, ESPN 730 AM.
