VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Rawhide (8-2, 8-2) overcame a three run deficit to win the game and series against the Bakersfield Blaze (3-7, 3-7) at Recreation Ballpark 7-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The blown lead marks the third time in the series that Bakersfield blew a multi-run advantage to lose against Visalia. The Rawhide overcame a four run margin in the series opener, prevailing 7-6 and a three run deficit in the second game to win 5-4 in 11 innings.
RHP Ethan Elias got the nod from Rawhide manager J.R House to make his second start of the season in the matinee affair.
Bakersfield took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on two walks, an infield single and a double steal. 3B Brock Hebert stole home after 1B Kyle Petty stole second and Hebert beat the return throw from 2B Henry Castillo.
From the second through the fourth Elias faced the minimum from Bakersfield and it wasn't until the fifth that Bakersfield got back on the scoreboard. A lead-off single by RF Chantz Mack began the rally. Two batters later C Daniel Torres singled. LF Arby Fields walked to load the bases and Hebert and SS Drew Jackson followed with back-to-back RBI singles for a 3-0 Bakersfield lead.
Elias turned in a one, two, three sixth inning before being lifted in the seventh. His final line was 6.0 innings, three runs (all earned), six hits allowed, he walked four and struck out five, while not factoring in the decision.
RHP Andrew Moore, the 8th top prospect in the Seattle organization, pitched five shutout innings, allowing only one hit, a double by LF Grant Heyman in the third.
In the sixth inning against Moore, Visalia was bitten by the double bug, lacing three in a row including two RBI doubles. C Matt Jones started the rally and RF Victor Reyes knocked him in with a two-bagger followed by 1B Cody Regis's RBI double to cut the lead to 3-2. A couple of batters later DH Rudy Flores tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
Moore went 6.0 innings allowing five hits, three runs (all earned) with four strikeouts and no walks allowed.
RHP Myles Smith (1-0, 0.00) entered and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win after Visalia's offense took the lead courtesy of a Heyman RBI double scoring 3B Dawel Lugo against RHP Aaron Brooks (0-1,
Visalia cashed in on some insurance in the eighth when the first four men reached base safely. Flores had the big hit when he drove in two with a double. The Flores RBIs chased Brooks from the game and in 1.0 plus inning he allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits and a walk. Castillo capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-3.
RHP Jimmie Shewrfy closed out the win with a scoreless ninth, facing four batters.
Visalia has now trailed in seven of their eight wins this season, including 5-0 in one-run ballgames and the bullpen is a perfect 8-0.
Tomorrow night the Stockton Ports come to town for a three game series and it will be RHP Nick Baker (1-0, 2.57) on the hill for Visalia against RHP Daniel Gossett (0-2, 9.35) for the Ports. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Recreation Ballpark.
Tomorrow evening is also the first Make A Difference Monday where fans can bring a donation item and receive a free ticket to the game. This week all donations benefit Ruffles Rescue so bring a dog related item!
