SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Four Inland Empire pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at San Manuel Stadium. 66ers starting pitcher Tyler Carpenter limited San Jose to just one single over the first six innings before three Inland Empire relievers combined to shutdown the Giants over the final three frames. San Jose (3-4) has now dropped two out of the first three games in the series.

Giants starting pitcher Sam Coonrod (0-1) suffered his first loss of the year despite allowing just one unearned run over four innings. Coonrod scattered five hits, walked none and struck out none during his 69-pitch outing. The 66ers broke open the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth inning and never looked back en route to the victory.

San Jose's only two hits in the contest were a two-out single from Aramis Garcia in the top of the second and a leadoff single from Jonah Arenado in the eighth inning. The Giants advanced only one baserunner past first base for the entire game.

Inland Empire took an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the first against Coonrod. David Fletcher led off the frame with an infield single to shortstop. Two passed balls advanced Fletcher to third with one out before Taylor Ward lined an RBI single into right.

Coonrod kept the deficit at a single run for the remainder of his outing. The right-hander pitched around a two-out single in the bottom of the second, a one-out single in the third and a two-out single in the fourth before departing.

Jose Reyes (3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the fifth for the Giants and quickly ran into trouble. With one out, Ayendy Perez lined a single into right. Fletcher then doubled into the right field corner to score Perez all the way from first to make it 2-0. Tim Arakawa followed with a towering two-run home run down the right field line for a 4-0 advantage. The home run was Arakawa's first of the season.

Reyes kept the 66ers off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings retiring eight out of the last nine batters he faced before Martin Agosta (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth, but San Jose was unable to mount a comeback.

Carpenter (1-0) struck out five and walked one during his six-inning masterpiece to pick-up the win for Inland Empire. Relievers Keynan Middleton, Ronnie Muck and Eduardo Paredes then each threw a scoreless inning of relief to seal the Sixers victory.
