Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Bryan Muniz launched the first home run of the season for the JetHawks, but the High Desert Mavericks went ahead early and cruised to a 7-2 win over Lancaster in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at The Hangar. The Mavericks hit a pair of home runs of their own, as Travis Demeritte and Seth Spivey each went deep.
The Mavs scored two runs in the second and added two more in the third. Demeritte's homer came with one out in the sixth, as he hooked a ball the other way just inside the right field foul pole. He also had an RBI double in the game.
Lancaster got back into the game with single runs in the sixth and seventh. With two out in the sixth, Drew Ferguson and Nick Tanielu hit back-to-back doubles. It was Ferguson's fifth hit of the series. Muniz hit his home run with one out in the seventh.
Spivey's long ball, a two-run shot, broke open the game in the eighth for High Desert. The JetHawks threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but left the bases loaded. They went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the game and left eight on base.
Josh James, Ryan Thompson, and Trent Thornton combined to strike out 14 Mavericks. James (1-1) took the loss, striking out three and walking four in 3.1 innings. Thompson retired all five batters he faced with four punch outs. Thornton gave up both home runs to High Desert, but fanned seven in four innings.
The JetHawks (4-4) and Mavericks (7-4) split the four-game series, the first four of 30 meetings between the two clubs this season.
The JetHawks host the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the first of a three-game series tomorrow night at The Hangar. Brock Dykxhoorn (1-0) will start for Lancaster against Andrew Sopko (0-0). First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
