Bakersfield Blaze News Release
What should have been finally was on Saturday night in Visalia.
No it wasn't a perfect game from the Bakersfield Blaze, but it was the kind of stuff that this team is capable of in a 5-0 victory over the Visalia Rawhide.
Eddie Campbell danced his way out of traffic in the first four innings he pitched until he dialed things up in the fifth by striking out the side. From there on, three Blaze relief pitchers slammed the door shut on any thoughts of a comeback by the home team.
Campbell (1-0) last just 3.2 innings in his previous start and in his second, it looked like he wouldn't last as long.
Henry Castillo led the game off by reaching base because of an error by Brock Hebert at third base. Domingo Leyba lined out to Drew Jackson at shortstop for the first out, but Castillo was immediately caught stealing second base with Rudy Flores at the plate. Flores walked and then the ugly side of Bakersfield's defense showed up again.
Arby Fields dropped a routine pop fly by Grant Heyman in left field that advanced Flores to third and Heyman to second with two out. Campbell escaped the inning by striking out Colin Bray to end the threat.
Campbell got himself out of a two out jam in the second with two runners on base by punching out Castillo and his defense turned things around for him in the third when there were multiple runners on base yet again.
Things got a bit hairy in the 4th for Campbell and the Blaze, but the defense made up for another miscue. With Dawel Lugo on first, Victor Reyes reached first on a throwing error by Jackson only to see Kyle Petty pick up the errant ball from shallow right field and gun down Lugo at the plate.
Bakersfield led 1-0 after 4 innings of theatrical work, but things simmered down after that.
Campbell pitched the 5th inning and struck out the side before exiting for the night. Despite the errors and misfortune at times, Campbell surrendered four hits and struck out seven batters.
Ryan Horstman followed Campbell and proceeded to mow down Rawhide batters at every stop. Horstman struck out four batters in two innings before giving way to Kyle Hunter and Kody Kerski.
Offensively, Brock Hebert was 1-5 with an RBI in the leadoff spot and Drew Jackson went 2-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored.
Jay Baum continues to hold things down in the middle of the lineup going 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Baum this season is batting .310 in seven games for Bakersfield.
The win snaps Visalia's five-game winning streak over Bakersfield and it gives the Blaze a chance to split the series on Sunday afternoon.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm. David Gascon will have all the action on TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com.
