Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY- Zach Boychuk broke a third period tie with six minutes remaining in the game and the Albany River Rats held on for a 3-2 win over the Adirondack Phantoms Saturday night at the Times Union Center.

In one fluid motion Boychuk faked a backhand pass across the net mouth and snapped a forehand shot underneath the crossbar for the game winner. The River Rats claimed sole possession of first place in the East Division standings with the win and made it two-straight victories over the Phantoms in the 2009-10 Time Warner Cable Cup series.

River Rats captain Pat Dwyer gave his club a 2-1 lead late in the second period on a beautifully executed 2-on-1 rush with forward Jerome Samson. Dwyer dropped the puck to his trailing teammate and drove the net hard to deflect Samson's return pass behind Adirondack goalie Nic Riopel. The Phantoms found the equalizer midway through the third period on an odd-man-rush of their own, which saw Garrett Klotz rip a screamer past Peters.

Albany's Jacob Micflikier scored the game's first goal 13:49 into his River Rats debut; linemates Brad Herauf and Chris Terry assisted on the recent call-up's rebound put-away. Stefan Legein responded for Adirondack with 1:30 remaining in the first period, one-timing a perfect cross-ice pass from Jon Matsumoto into the open half of the goal.

River Rats goaltender Justin Peters stopped 31-of-33 shots faced to earn the win as Albany improved to 5-3-0-0 on the season. Phantoms goalie Nic Riopel allowed three goals on 34 shots and took the loss as Adirondack fell to 4-3-1-0 on the year. Albany out-shot the Phantoms 34-33 and went 0-for-2 on the power play; Adirondack was 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

The River Rats hit the road tomorrow for a 4:00 p.m. contest with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard. River Rats 2009-10 season and flex ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
