Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY-Bryan Rodney scored in the fifth round of the shootout for his second game-winning goal in as many nights to lead the Albany River Rats to a 5-4 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday afternoon at the Times Union Center.

Albany led 3-2 after 40 minutes, but the Penguins out-shot the home team 10-3 in the third period and tied the game with 55 seconds remaining on Tim Wallace's 22nd goal of the year. Dryason Bowman scored the shootout's first goal in the third round and goaltender Mike Morrison denied 4-of-5 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton snipers to extend Albany's point streak to six games (3-0-0-2).

River Rats veteran forward Steven Goertzen broke a 2-2 tie with the second period's only goal at 4:22 on a strong individual play. Linemate Chris Terry softly chipped the puck into the offensive zone and Goertzen out-raced a pair of Penguins to gain control, before cutting towards the net and dragging the puck around goalie John Curry for a backhand finish.

The Penguins drew first blood at 9:50 of the opening period, when Joey Haddad forced a turnover in the offensive zone and sent a backhand pass through the crease to Konstantin Pushkarev on the back door. Albany's Jacob Micflikier scored the game's next two goals, first deking around Curry to tie the game at 14:56 and then banging home a power play rebound to give Albany the lead at 18:30; rookie Drayson Bowman assisted on both goals. Penguins leading scorer Dustin Jeffrey pocketed an unassisted breakaway goal with 26 seconds left in the frame to make it a 2-2 contest heading into the second period.

Morrison stopped 29-of-33 shots faced in the game to earn the win as Albany improved to 36-24-3-5 this season. Curry allowed four goals on 19 shots and took the loss, as the Penguins fell to 33-30-1-2 this year. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton out-shot the River Rats 33-20 and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Albany was 1-for-3 on the man-advantage.

Albany wraps up its four-in-five docket with a Sunday afternoon home game against the Syracuse Crunch at 3:00 p.m. River Rats 2010 Calder Cup playoff packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
