March 13, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Houston Aeros News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - RW Tim Stapleton scored the game-tying goal and the shootout game-winner to give the Chicago Wolves (42-19-1-5) a 2-1 victory over the Houston Aeros (29-29-6-3) in front of 10,418 at Allstate Arena Saturday night. RW Duncan Milroy scored the only goal for Houston and G Anton Khudobin (11-16-3) stopped 27 of 28 shots faced in his third shootout loss of the season. G Peter Mannino (22-3-0) made 23 saves to earn his 22nd win in 25 decisions.
The Aeros hadn't scored first against Chicago in their previous five meetings until Houston lit the lamp at 18:08 of the first period. C Nathan Smith flicked a centering feed toward the stick of Milroy who tipped it five-hole for his 11th of the season. The helper extended Smith's point streak to five games (3g, 2a).
Strong defensive play was the theme of the middle session as both teams were held scoreless while the Aeros killed the game's only penalty, a Hooking minor to Milroy at 8:20. Houston outshot the Wolves 9-8 in the period.
The Wolves got the game-tying goal 11:54 into the final stanza. Stapleton, camped out on the far post, took a feed from C Jason Krog and lifted the puck top shelf for his team-leading 26th goal of the campaign. Neither club managed to find the net over the remaining 9:06 of regulation nor through the five-minute overtime period sending the game to a shootout. RW Jon DiSalvatore scored in the opening round to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead, but Chicago answered with goals from forwards Andrew Kozek, Stapleton and Matt Anderson to seal the victory.
Chicago outshot the Aeros 29-24 on the night while Houston killed the only power play of the game for either side. The Aeros earned their first point of the season against Chicago pushing their record to 0-5-0-1 against the Wolves. The two clubs will finish the season series with a pair of games at Toyota Center Mar. 31 and Apr. 2.
The Aeros return to the ice Sunday night for a 5:05 p.m. tilt at the Rockford Metro Centre against the IceHogs. Watch the game live on ahllive.com or listen to Joe O'Donnell's call on 1070 AM-KNTH. Follow the interactive in-game blog on aeros.com.
