Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Crestwood, IL - The Windy City ThunderBolts dropped their second straight decision to the River City Rascals on Sunday night, 8-2, at Hawkinson Ford Field.
The Rascals got the better of ThunderBolts' starting pitcher Ryan Dittfurth. In the second inning they scraped up a run when catcher Zack Riera came around to score on a single by third baseman Justin McKinley. Riera reached base when he was hit by an offering by Dittfurth.
Two more runs were posted on the scoreboard by River City in the next inning. Left fielder Kirk McConnell led off with a single to leftfield. Teammate David Arnold drew a walk and a single by first baseman Mike Madrid loaded the bases. Riera lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring McConnell. A balk by Dittfurth pushed the runners up a base and a single by right fielder Mikela Olsen brought Arnold home to give the Rascals a 3-0 lead.
ThunderBolts' second baseman Matt Ferrara drove the second pitch of the bottom of the third inning over the fence in left field to put the home team on the board.
River City put the game out of reach in the sixth as they shook up Dittfurth for four more runs before he was relieved by Steve Zirloli. McConnell put the finishing touches on River City's offensive showing with a homer to right in the top of the eighth.
First baseman Rich Daly tried to ignite a ninth inning comeback with a one out solo homerun to center field but the Rascals retired the final two batters to make it an 8-2 final.
Rascals' starter Steve Brook earned the win to improve his record to 3-0. Brook tossed seven strong innings, giving up just the one run while striking out eight and walking none. Dittfurth suffered the loss for the ThunderBolts as he allowed seven runs, six of which were earned over five and one-third innings.
The ThunderBolts and Rascals will finish off their three game series on Monday night at 7:05pm. Tickets are still available. Mike Renery (RHP, 1-2, 3.57) will make the start for Windy City and Brian Keating (LHP, 0-1, 2.25) will take the mound for River City.
