Florence, Kentucky â Richmond lost its second straight game 7-5 in Florence on Sunday night. The Freedom continued their hot hitting early in the game. Five runs crossed the plate in the first inning when Scott Martin sent a ball over the left field wall with the bases loaded for a grand slam. Brandon Cornell followed that up with a solo home run of his own that gave Florence a 5-0 lead. Two more Florence runs scored in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Trevor Hall and an RBI double from Mike Galloway to increase the lead to 7-0. That would be the end of Florence scoring but was enough to send Richmond home with the defeat.
Jared Howton made his third start of the year for the Roosters but had a hard time getting in a rhythm. He pitched four innings, gave up six hits and seven runs, and walked three in the loss.
Richmond attempted to rally several times but shot themselves in the foot by grounding into double plays in each of the first three innings. The Roosters got on the board in the third with a pair of RBI singles from Joe Cuervo and Josh Hollingsworth to cut the lead to 7-2. Richmond drew even closer in the fifth when Cuervo singled to center where the ball was mishandled by Scott Martin which allowed Nate Gravley and Mike Reese to score. Kevin White got a double that scored Cuervo and reduced the lead to 7-5. That is where the scoring would stop and neither team could get anything more offensively as the Freedom would go on to win. The Roosters are now 6-11 on the year.
The Roosters will play one more game against Florence on Monday and try to avoid the sweep. Tony Casoli (1-1, 2.89 ERA) and will be apposed by Joel Posey (2-0, 4.96 ERA). The team will return home on Tuesday for a three game series against the Rockford Riverhawks.
