Freedom beat Roosters in slugfest

Florence, Kentucky – Runs were plentiful in a 16-12 loss to Florence on Saturday. A hot and muggy night saw lots of offense and several pitching changes. Richmond committed three errors and gave up some costly hits in the loss.

The Roosters scored first when Tony Sanguinetti singled with two outs to score Joe Cuervo from second and give Richmond a 1-0 lead after half an inning. Florence got a solo home run from Mike Calloway to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Richmond got the lead again in the top of the second with a solo home run from Brian Baker, his first of the year. Richmond would only hold the lead for another inning when Florence came alive in the bottom of the third to score seven runs. The big blow came when Scott Martin hit a three-run homer over the left field wall. In all, the Freedom brought eleven batters to the plate and finished the inning with an 8-2 lead. Derek Bennett started the game for Richmond and lasted only 2 2/3 innings giving up eight runs, six earned, over six hits.

Richmond and Florence each went to their bullpens early but the numbers on their backs didn't seem to matter as both teams continued to score throughout the game. Florence continued put up larger numbers however and were ahead 16-12 when the last out was recorded. 16 runs for Florence ties the team's all-time record for most runs scored in a game.

Richmond finished with 12 runs, 16 hits, and committed three errors while Florence scored 16 runs from 16 hits and committed no errors. The teams hit seven combined home runs in game. Brian Baker, a new addition to the Roosters, went 5-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Mike Galloway led the way for Florence going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a three run and solo shot, to help catapult his team to the win. Mike Causey got the win for Florence and Bennett took the loss.

Richmond (6-10) has two games left against Florence (9-7) beginning Sunday. Jared Howton (1-0, 1.00 ERA) will start for the Roosters and Kyle Geswein (0-0, 2.45 ERA) makes his debut as a starter for the Freedom.
