Syracuse Mets News Release
Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs, the triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Rochester Red Wings 4-3 in 13 innings on Friday night. In his first game with Syracuse, Danny Espinosa had two RBI including the game winning solo home run in the top of the 13th. Syracuse used six different pitchers with Jason Bergmann picking up the win throwing two innings of scoreless relief.
Syracuse (58-55) scored in the first inning after Boomer Whiting reached on a single to left, stole second, took third on an error by Rochester catcher Danny Lehmann, and stole home for the second time in less than a month. Whiting is the only Chief to steal home this year, having done it twice.
Rochester (40-74) retaliated with two runs in the fifth off of Chiefs starter Erik Arnesen. After D'Angelo Jiminez walked to lead off the inning and Brock Peterson doubled with two down, Lehmann laced his first hit in thirteen at bats in Triple-A to center for a two-run double and made it 2-1 Rochester.
The Chiefs answered back with an RBI single in the seventh from Carlos Maldonado and took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Danny Espinosa. It was his first RBI in his Triple-A debut game.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Rochester rallied to tie the game off of Chiefs closer Adam Carr. With Peterson on second, Dustin Martin grounded a single to center and Peterson scored just ahead of the throw from centerfielder Michael Martinez. The game entered extra innings tied at 3.
The game was scoreless through the 10th, 11th, and 12th with Syracuse getting the go-ahead run to second base twice and Rochester doing it once.
In the 13th inning leading off against Tim Lahey, Espinosa clobbered a pitch to right off the gazebo beyond the fence for his first Triple-A home run and his 19th overall on the season.
In the bottom half of the inning, Jason Bergmann walked Brock Peterson and he was then sacrificed to second on a bunt by Lehmann. Bergmann then hit Brandon Roberts in the foot with a pitch to put the winning run on base. With one out and two on, Dustin Martin singled to load the bases.
The final batter of the game would be Brian Dinkelman. He popped up a pitch from Bergmann and the infield fly rule was invoked. However, no Chief player caught the ball and it landed to the right of the mound. With two down, Peterson sprinted for the plate but was thrown out by Lambin to end the ballgame in a double play.
On Saturday, the series shifts to Alliance Bank Stadium. Shairon Martis (7-6, 4.18) will start for the Chiefs against Nick Blackburn (0-0,0.00) for the Red Wings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 with the Syracuse Baseball Wall of Fame induction ceremony taking place on the field beforehand.
