Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - After putting ten runs on the board in game one, the Bulls could not get their offense going in the nightcap as they were downed 4-1 by Indianapolis. Virgil Vasquez took the loss for Durham, only his second of the season in 11 starts. The Bulls split their twin bill with the Indians on the night, staying 26 games above the .500 mark at 69-43 on the season.

Kevin Melillo led off the game with a home run, putting Indy on top 1-0 after just two pitches by Vasquez. Rehabbing catcher Ryan Doumit doubled with one out in the inning and would later come around to score on a double by recently acquired John Bowker.

Doumit would extend the Indians lead to four in the fourth inning, hitting a two-run opposite field home run over the Blue Monster in left-center field. It was the first home run since joining Indianapolis for Doumit, who had eight for the Pirates before going on the disabled list on July 22 with a concussion.

Vasquez went the distance for Durham, allowing four earned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in 7.0 innings of work. Over his last five outings, the right-hander has allowed seven home runs but has still managed to go 2-2 during that span.

The Bulls had opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings but could not bring a run across. Justin Ruggiano grounded into a double play with a runner on to end the fourth, and the Bulls loaded the bases with one-out in the fifth before Indians lefty Brian Burres got Omar Luna and Desmond Jennings to fly out to end the threat.

Durham got on the board with a run in the sixth inning off Burres, as Elliot Johnson drew the Bulls fifth walk of the game with one out. After getting Justin Ruggiano swinging, Joe Dillon followed with a two-out RBI double to cut the lead to 4-1. Dillon was the lone standout on offense for the Bulls in the nightcap, finishing the second game 2-for-3 and going 4-for-6 with a walk, a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI in the double header.

Jean Machi came on after the double, recording the final four outs as the Indians earned the split.

The two teams continue their series tomorrow at the DBAP as LHP Heath Phillips (8-6 3.88) takes on RHP Charlie Morton (3-4 4.50) for Indianapolis. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
